Organic Agriculture, Food Safety and Supply in Northern Ghana - CAOF’s Strategy Organic Eprints
Agana, Gerard L..
Northern Ghana covers the three regions in the north of Ghana and parts of Northern Brong Ahafo Region and Northern Volta. It covers a large part of the Savannah vegetation of Ghana and suffers from declining soil fertility, food insecurity, climate variability and change. Organic agriculture has the potential to reverse these ills even though the advocates of conventional agriculture may disagree with this assertion. The Coalition for the Advancement of Organic Farming (CAOF) has seen organic farming as the way to tackling these challenges in a sustainable manner. CAOF has conducted various research, developed and implemented projects and has seen that this strategy is actually addressing these challenges. This paper presents CAOF’s strategy in trying to...

Entwicklung eines Rückstands-Kontrollsystems im Bereich Honig aus ökologischer Bienenhaltung Organic Eprints
Boecking, Otto; Kubersky, Ulrike.

Feeding strategies in Swiss organic farming to improve food quality and animal health Organic Eprints
Früh, Barbara.
At the moment, Switzerland has about 6,500 organic farmers, with 11 % of the agriculture area managed organically. The main regulations in organic farming are The Schweizer Bio-Verordnung (Swiss Government Regulation for Organic farming). These regulations are increasingly adapted to the EU-Regulation for organic farming. The BIO SUISSE regulation has further requirements. Nearly all organic farmers are BIO SUISSE farmers. The symbol of BIO SUISSE is a bud.

Can the inspection procedures in organic certification be improved? Evidence from a case study in Italy Organic Eprints
Gambelli, Danilo; Solfanelli, Francesco; Zanoli, Raffaele.
The aim of this paper is to analyze if the effectiveness of the inspection procedures in the organic certification is conditioned by measurable structural and managerial factors under control of organic control bodies (CBs), and if there is scope for possible improvements. The analysis is based on data from the archives of the largest Italian organic CB, containing information on operators’ characteristics, including a qualitative discrete risk score defined by the CB, inspectors’ characteristics, type of inspection and the outcome of the inspection, in terms of noncompliance detected and sanctions imposed. The aim is to analyze factors that could make an inspection more effective. Our measure of effectiveness is the number of detected noncompliance per...

A decision network for inspections in organic farms in Italy Organic Eprints
Gambelli, Danilo; Zanoli, Raffaele; Solfanelli, Francesco.
Inspections in organic farming systems are the key tool to assure reliability of the organic business and detection of non-compliant operators. Supporting control bodies in the inspection procedure can increase the efficiency and competitiveness of the sector. Here we propose a decision support system for inspections based on Bayesian networks. Our model is based on statistical information taken from the archives of main Italian control body, and considers decision strategies according to the maximization of expected utility based on risk minimization. © 2012 The authors and IOS Press.

Analytical overview of the Chinese organic sector with the focus on rural development Organic Eprints
Gargili Kuehl, Asli; Yonggong, Liu.
Rural development in China has been a huge success: from hunger to self-sufficiency to food donor in only a few decades. This fast growth of agricultural production, however, came at a cost – which consequently stresses the natural resources, pollutes environment and increases income inequality between poor and rich. Now, Chinese authorities seek other ways than conventional agriculture to continue high productivity, but without causing degradation of natural resources and environment to fulfil the needs for safe nutrition of a growing society. Ecological or organic agriculture is suggested to be a modern and promising alternative that has a sound record of adapting food safety and natural harmony. Within this context, the main questions of this...

Food safety in an organic perspective Organic Eprints
Kristensen, Erik Steen; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Hansen, Birgitte.
The holistic perspective of organic farming implies a broader conception of food safety that includes both product safety and agri-food system safety. The credibility of organic food can only be maintained if the organic agri-food system is developed in correspondence with the basic organic principles. In this way it will be possible to show the whole organic agri-food system as a safer alternative to conventional farming. Thereby trust will be supported in organic foods despite the sparse (and often unattainable) hard scientific evidence that organic food is healthier.

Healthy growth in mid-scale values based food chains Organic Eprints
Kvam, Gunn-Turid.
This paper is a literature review of studies of mid-scale food values based food chains and healthy growth processes in the organic food sector. By midscale values based food chains we mean productions that are growing out of the niche/small scale market into larger volumes and sales. Previous research have shown that niche market chains might have inherent problems in moving from niche to volume, while mainstream large-scale markets have inherent problems in securing and advancing organic values. A main hypothesis is that mid-scale value based chains are able to deal with these challenges because they are based on a different form of marketing logic and strategies than either small- or large scale chains. As a first step in analysis of the success of...

Control of enteric pathogens in ready-to-eat vegetable crops in organic and ‘low input’ production systems: a HACCP-based approach Organic Eprints
Leifert, C.; Ball, K.; Volakakis, N.; Cooper, J.M..
Risks from pathogens such as Salmonella, Yersinia, Campylobacter and Escherichia coli O157 have been identified as a particular concern for organic and ‘low input’ food production systems that rely on livestock manure as a nutrient source. Current data do not allow any solid conclusions to be drawn about the level of this risk, relative to conventional production systems. This review describes six Risk Reduction Points (RRPs) where risks from enteric pathogens can be reduced in ready-to-eat vegetables. Changes can be made to animal husbandry practices (RRP1) to reduce inoculum levels in manure. Outdoor livestock management (RRP2) can be optimized to eliminate the risk of faecal material entering irrigation water. Manure storage and processing (RRP3), soil...

Datenbanktechnische Voraussetzungen zur Schaffung eines Rückverfolgbarkeitssystems Organic Eprints
Mäder, Rolf.
The traceability and safeguarding of origin of organic products shall be improved by the development of an overlapping technical data base traceability system. This is to contribute to the prevention and mitigation of scandals and strengthen consumers` trust in organic products. Data base systems existing so far or just being developed do serve different purposes depending on the respective fabricator. There are data bases for the acquisition of basic and company related data of the client, systems to delineate the processes of control and certification as well as data bases for the provision of information for the participants of the market, such as information related to products, the products` properties and availability, as well as internal inventory...

Acceptance of the most common quality attributes of organic food in the Finnish food chain Organic Eprints
Nuutila, Jaakko.
The aim of this study was to establish the degree of the acceptance of organic food production and food in the Finnish food chain. The organic food system in Finland is poorly developed and one of the many reasons is that the food chain stakeholders are not committed and do not share common objectives for organic food and its production. A survey was carried among 1527 respondents from agriculture, industry, retail, catering and consumers to establish their opinions on safety and healthiness of organic food, and ecology and ethicality of organic production as well as the support that their own environment provided to their opinions. The results show that all environments are very positive for all four attributes. The best support for positive opinions on...

Unwrapping The Northern Sea cheese - Enacting place in the Danish dairy food sector Organic Eprints
Ostrowski, Kasper.
The Nordic foodscape has changed radically over the last decade. In Scandinavia there is massive focus on a Nordic gourmet food evolution in general and in Denmark specifically also a cheese revolution. Notions of terroir and place specific foodstuffs are rapidly gaining interest in the Nordic countries. In the fall of 2008 Thise Mejeri won an annual Danish gourmet dairy prize with their speciality cheese ‘Vesterhavsost’. The judges noted that: “The cheese has character, and it has the “terroir” that we search for. It means that it is characterized by the origin of the milk, as well as the area of production and maturing. It has a good story” . The Vesterhavsost (Eng. ‘The Northern Sea cheese’) was thus inscribed in an (it seems) ever-growing trend...

Biopotraviny, biomed a pesticidy Organic Eprints
Rozsypal, Roman.

Reference figures for organic farming inspections Organic Eprints
Schmidt, Rebekka; Klöble, Ulrike.
Consumers trust the quality of organic farming products and pay higher prices for organic food. For this reason controls are necessary to ensure that legal standards under the EC Organic Farming Regulation are being followed in production and processing of animal and crop products. Collected in this book are reference figures to be applied in controls for calculating product flow, appraising plausibility and also reliably assessing yields and wastage. Target groups are inspectors conducting on-location farm or plant inspections or those wishing to learn about new aspects within this sector. Farm managers or advisors preparing for such controls can likewise find valuable information. In addition to its role as control point reference, the book is also aimed...
